About the role

The Student Engagement Coordinator serves under the supervision of the Associate Director of Student Involvement. This role is responsible for managing the recognition process for student organizations, developing and delivering training and programs for leadership and skills development, and providing consultations to student organizations, advisors, and community stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Advise recognized student organization officers and members on expectations and policies, organizational management, and leadership and skill development.
  • Support student organization advisors by providing necessary tools and resources to help groups succeed.
  • Manage annual online CSU mandated training for student organization officers.
  • Identify and coordinate tailored training and programs for specific types of student organizations in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Plan, implement, and assist with promotional events for student organizations.
  • Develop and coordinate the annual student organization awards process.
  • Provide direction, hiring, training, and support for student assistants.
  • Communicate regularly with student organizations on changes in expectations and policies.
  • Oversee the annual re-recognition process for student organizations.
  • Market and promote new organization recognition.
  • Support other Student Engagement Coordinators in various programs and events.

Requirements

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, or a master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may substitute for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

  • Ability to provide consultation to multiple student organizations and familiarity with compliance issues relevant to student organizations.
  • Knowledge of student supervisory best practices to aid in the growth and development of student staff.
  • Knowledge of leadership development theory and best practices.
  • Knowledge of social justice program models and theories.
  • Knowledge of student transition and development theories.
  • Knowledge of compliance issues relevant to student organizations (i.e., hazing, alcohol, recruitment, Title IX, etc.).
  • Skilled in developing training opportunities for student leaders.
  • Demonstrated proactive leadership in the development of student affairs programs and collaborative relationships.
  • Ability to initiate, plan, implement, and evaluate events as well as ongoing programmatic efforts.
  • Ability to work both independently and with groups to assess needs, develop strategies, and implement programs.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic planning and outcome-driven assessment efforts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff in a wide variety of university committees, departments, and/or student organizations to develop and implement programmatic initiatives.
  • Ability to effectively train, develop, and supervise student staff.
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work and projects.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Benefits

Compensation classification: Student Services Professional III
Anticipated hiring range: $5,540/month
CSU salary range: $5,540/month - $7,893/month
San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
