Structural Engineer Intern

About the Role

An entry-level Structural Engineer must be detail-oriented, open to learning, and have a structural design background. They must be working towards their SE or PE license. This role involves performing calculations, assisting with the production of structural drawings in Revit, writing evaluations and reports, and participating in job site observations. The engineer will design structural steel, concrete, and foundations for agricultural and industrial projects using hand calculations and various design software. This role profile is subject to change at any time.

Responsibilities

• Protect People: Ensure safety compliance in project design per OSHA, MSHA, IBC, IFC, NFPA, and other regulations. Research and ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal codes. Perform job site observations and report deficiencies, safety issues, and quality control concerns to the Sr. Structural Engineer.
• Build Relationships: Collaborate with owners, engineers, architects, consultants, contractors, and project management staff. Communicate effectively with internal and external teams, participate in design coordination meetings, and utilize online collaboration tools.
• Focus on End Goals: Assist with structural design, make recommendations, and oversee the completion of construction drawings, specifications, and reports under senior guidance. Manage time and tasks effectively, and contribute to scope development, site investigation, and technical writing.
• Drive Innovation: Integrate new technology and environmentally friendly practices into designs. Analyze problems through data analysis and collaboration to improve designs and reduce callbacks. Consider safety, manufacturability, and efficiency in the design process.

Qualifications

• Working towards a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering emphasis.
• Pursuing a Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) License.
• Completed courses in structural analysis and structural steel design; courses in reinforced concrete design or foundation design are a plus.
• Experience with Revit, 3D software (Navisworks/Recap), Risa, and Microsoft Office is beneficial.
• Willing to travel up to 25% by air and ground.

Physical Demands

• Exert 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
• Continuous vision, hearing, twisting, and talking; frequent standing, fine dexterity, sitting, and handling.
• Ability to ascend/descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs, and work in confined spaces.
• Work in cold/hot environments, on concrete floors, and wear personal protective gear.
• Occasional walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and crouching.
