Structural Engineer Intern
About the role
Merrick & Company is seeking a college or graduate school Structural Engineering student for a paid summer internship for Summer 2027 at our Melbourne, FL office. Merrick's Summer Internship Program offers meaningful, hands-on experience for students. Designed as a shorter-term, exploratory experience, internships allow students to apply what they're learning in school while gaining exposure to real projects, professional collaboration, and day-to-day life at an employee-owned company. The summer internship has a commitment of approximately mid-May through mid-August 2027.
What You'll Do
The intern will be exposed to a variety of structural engineering tasks which may include:
- Steel and concrete design
- Foundation design
- Structural drafting & detailing
- Gravity load analysis
- Lateral load analysis of buildings and other structures
The intern will collaborate with other disciplines, interface with engineers, designers, and clients, follow schedules and budget commitments, work independently and in a team environment.
Required Qualifications
- Must have graduation date after August 2027 to be eligible
- Must be currently enrolled and entering junior year of undergraduate degree or higher
- Must be pursuing an engineering degree in Civil (with structural emphasis) or Structural Engineering at an ABET accredited program
- Eligible candidate should have completed basic statics and mechanics of materials coursework
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to problem solve
- Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship
Desired Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of at least one finite element analysis software program such as RISA 3D
- Basic knowledge of either AutoCAD or Revit
- Completion of some introductory coursework in structural analysis and either steel or concrete design
- Local candidates preferred
