About the Role
Under immediate supervision, perform skilled work in the construction and maintenance of street and alley systems, including earthwork preparation, construction of rigid and flexible base surfaces, and operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate dump trucks with a capacity of up to 18 tons.
- Perform minor maintenance and servicing on equipment.
- Operate mechanical sweepers, compaction rollers, and utility trailers.
- Operate water trucks, earth-moving equipment, vibratory steel wheel rollers, and skid steer loaders.
- Operate self-propelled loaders, liquid asphalt distributors, backhoes, and black-top paving machines.
- Compact hot mix asphalt and stockpile base materials.
- Operate motor graders, scarifiers, and other attachments for street and road maintenance.
- Process base for asphalt and rigid paving in confined areas.
- Set forms, place reinforcing steel, and prepare for concrete placement.
- Level concrete using screeds and finish rigid pavements.
- Patch potholes and place traffic control devices.
Requirements
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement within 90 days of employment.
- Work Zone Traffic Control certification within 12 months of employment.
- For SMT II: Valid Class A CDL with Water Tanker endorsement.
- For SMT III: Valid Class A CDL with Hazardous Cargo Endorsement preferred.
- For SMT IV: Valid Class A CDL with Hazardous Cargo Endorsement preferred.
Qualifications
- SMT Trainee/I: Entry-level position; high school diploma or GED required. Previous light/medium construction equipment experience preferred.
- SMT II: Basic understanding of rigid and flexible pavements; experience operating heavy construction equipment; 6 months of work in Street Division or formal training required.
- SMT III: Competence in Street Maintenance Technician Series; 4 years of heavy equipment operation or SMT II experience preferred.
- SMT IV: Highly skilled position; 3 years of SMT III experience or equivalent in rigid/flexible pavement construction and maintenance required; 4+ years preferred.
Skills
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment and tools.
- Perform minor equipment repairs and adjustments.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Work as part of a team and lead crews (SMT IV).
- Finish rigid pavements and lay hot mix asphalt to engineered grades (SMT IV).
Physical Demands
Heavy physical demands: lifting up to 100 pounds, carrying up to 50 pounds. Extensive standing, bending, and vision; moderate walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching, twisting, climbing, and talking.
Work Environment
Exposure to noise, extreme heat and cold, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards. Requires travel to different sites.
