This role is designed to prepare you for a Store Manager position by learning and developing the necessary skills. You will focus on driving sales, building a strong team, fostering customer loyalty, and ensuring the execution of company standards in a safe and productive environment.
Responsibilities
- Observe and learn how to build and manage the store team, including hiring, staffing, scheduling, payroll management, training, development, and performance reviews.
- Drive sales and profit through top-line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, and shrink reduction.
- Grow the grooming business while ensuring the safety and care of all pets.
- Generate brand awareness through local marketing events such as pet adoptions, community fairs, or parades.
- Lead the execution of Petsense standards, including store presentation, inventory management, freight movement, pricing, loss prevention, and procedural compliance.
- Perform daily duties such as handling customer complaints, opening/closing procedures, operating the cash register, supervising cash handling, and reconciling cash drawers.
- Work with small animals (e.g., snakes, spiders, hamsters) while adhering to safety policies.
- Train on processing daily, weekly, and monthly paperwork, including invoices, schedules, product orders, and reports.
- Learn sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budget reviews, and documentation of team member evaluations.
- Manage periodic price changes, budgeting, sales forecasting, and auditing of store processes.
- Care for live animals in-store, including those for sale, adoption, or services, while following company policies.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of retail leadership experience.
- Experience with profit/loss management, scheduling, shrink control, payroll, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling is preferred.
- Must be 18 years or older with a valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; ability to read, write, and count accurately.

Working Conditions
- Favorable indoor environment with moderate noise; hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt) indoors and outdoors.
- Work shifts vary but generally range from 4 to over 10 hours, including days, nights, and weekends.
- Travel may be required for training, meetings, or assisting other locations.
Physical Requirements
- Non-sedentary role requiring movement throughout the store and outdoor areas.
- Ability to move and transfer merchandise up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent standing, kneeling, twisting, crouching, squatting, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders.
- Ability to operate store equipment such as computers, cash registers, dollies, hand trucks, forklifts (if over 18), and balers (if over 18).
- Ability to read, write, and count accurately for documentation and communication.
- Ability to dispense propane (if over 18) and complete required training.
- Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
