Store Manager, Petsense
About the Role
The Manager in Training is responsible for learning the duties of the Store Manager position and developing skills required for a Store Manager role. Primary responsibilities include driving outstanding sales results through effective sales techniques, building the team, building customer loyalty through world class customer service, and leading execution of company standards. This position also promotes a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors.
Responsibilities
- Observe and learn how to build the store team through hiring/staffing decisions, Team Member retention, schedule and payroll management, Team Member training and development, succession planning, and performance reviews.

- Drive sales and profit through top-line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, and protecting company assets by reducing shrink.
- Grow the grooming business and ensure all pets in care are safe.
- Generate brand awareness through local marketing events such as Pet Adoption, community fairs, or parades.
- Lead execution of Petsense standards through store presentation, inventory management, freight movement, pricing/promotional activities, loss prevention, procedural audit compliance, and planning/delegation of daily tasks.
- Perform a combination of the following duties:
- Handle and resolve customer complaints/issues to ensure a positive shopping experience.
- Perform opening and closing procedures.
- Transport and make bank deposits or coordinate with armored car service.
- Operate cash register/computer and supervise cash handling procedures.
- Work with small animals (e.g., snakes, spiders, crickets, hamsters, amphibians) while upholding safety policies.
- Reconcile cash drawers and vault accurately daily.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Work varied hours, days, nights, and weekends as dictated by business needs.
- Train on daily, weekly, and monthly paperwork processing, including invoices, schedules, product orders, returns, and reports.
- Train on periodic sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budget review, and documentation of team member evaluations and corrective action.
- Train on managing periodic price changes, budgeting, sales forecasting, and auditing store processes.
- Learn how to care for live animals in-store during services, adoption, or sale, and understand related policies.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of retail leadership experience.
- Experience with profit/loss, scheduling, shrink control, payroll management, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling is preferred.
- Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license.
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must be able to read, write, and count accurately.

Working Conditions
- Favorable working environment, generally indoors with moderate noise.
- Indoor floors and outdoor lots are typically hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt).
- Lighting and temperature are adequate.
- Work shifts vary but generally are no less than 4 hours and may exceed 10 hours.
- Travel may be necessary for training, meetings, or assisting in other locations.
Physical Requirements
- Non-sedentary role requiring visibility, accessibility, and communication with team members throughout the store.
- Must have the physical and mental stamina to move throughout the store and outdoor areas quickly and safely.
- Ability to operate all equipment related to job duties efficiently, safely, and accurately.
- Tasks include (with or without reasonable accommodation):
- Moving and transferring merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lifting or reaching merchandise overhead.
- Frequently standing, kneeling, twisting, crouching, squatting, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders.
- Moving throughout the store for an entire shift.
- Safely accessing all areas of the store, including selling floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
- Operating store equipment such as dolly, handtruck, forklift, baler, computer, and cash register (forklift and baler requirements do not apply if under 18).
- Reading, writing, and counting accurately to complete documentation.
- Utilizing strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Processing information/merchandise through the point-of-sale system.
- Completing training and certification to dispense propane (does not apply if under 18).
- Traveling as required for district needs.
- Driving or operating a vehicle for business needs.
