About the Role
This position involves overseeing stevedore functions during vessel operations, providing operational assistance during vessel stowage, and maintaining communication with Equipment Operators and Stevedores physically loading the vessel. The role must be carried out in accordance with general work instructions and established office practices, procedures, and precedents.
Responsibilities
- Performs all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines.
- Follows stow plan for the loading and discharging of vessels.
- Supervises and coordinates loading and discharge during vessel operations.
- Ensures gear is in good condition before use when lifting cargo; reports any damages or accidents immediately to Superintendent.
- Uses two-way hand-held radios to communicate with staff during operations.
- Comprehends and communicates flagman hand signals.
- Cooperates with U.S. Customs during cargo operations for each vessel.
- Maintains complete confidentiality of all information.
- Leads, supervises, and works with assigned personnel in the performance of their duties.
- Operates 9K, 30K, or 52K forklift when needed to move cargo to designated areas.
- Reports employees not using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to Superintendent.
- Maintains a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards, and awareness of surroundings (e.g., vehicles, people checking equipment) at all times.
- Performs additional job duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of one (1) year of industry-related experience performing Longshore functions, both onboard vessels and onshore. In lieu of Longshore experience, candidates must have a minimum of one (1) year warehouse or industrial yard experience involving heavy cargo handling, operation of large-capacity forklifts, and use of heavy-lifting equipment (e.g., overhead cranes) in a port, marine terminal, or similar industrial environment.
- Strong leadership skills with experience supervising warehouse labor and operations, including supervising crew members and carrying out supervisor duties.
- Minimum one (1) year forklift experience, operating 9K, 30K, or 52K forklift.
- Forklift Certified.
- Ability to read, write, and speak Basic English.
- Ability to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
- Must be able to obtain HAZMAT certification within 90 days from hire.
- Ability to meet and deal effectively with stevedore co-workers.
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
- Ability to think logically, follow procedures and instructions, and make sound decisions.
- Flexible schedule, including rotating overnight and day shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- HAZMAT Certification.
- Knowledge operating two-way hand-held radios.
- Flagman hand signal knowledge.
Physical Requirements
- Subject to physical and/or DOT Screening as required, along with other applicable tests.
- Ability to work in high altitudes.
- Occasionally required to sit (while driving), grasp, and exercise eye-hand coordination and eye-hand-foot coordination.
- Frequently required to reach forward, exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion, and finger dexterity.
- Regularly required to use fingers.
- Frequently required to stand and walk.
- Frequently required to talk and hear.
- Occasionally required to climb, bend forward, squat, twist, reach overhead, and pinch.
- Occasionally required to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 55 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Safety Requirements
- Report safety hazards.

Supervision
Receives direct supervision from the Superintendent and exercises supervision over Operators and Longshore workers on the vessel.
Work Conditions
- Exposure to environmental factors such as cold, extreme heat, rain, snow, wind, and high humidity during day and night shifts.
- Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
- Continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
