About the Role
The State & Local Tax Manager will provide state & local income/franchise tax consulting and compliance services to a diverse client base operating in numerous states. Typical consulting projects include managing state voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), state tax due diligence, and state income/franchise tax audits. The role involves advising clients on various issues such as state income/franchise tax sourcing, nexus, and accounting for state income taxes. Additionally, the manager will review and/or prepare state income tax returns, develop and maintain client relationships, manage deadlines and budgets, and continuously develop technical expertise.
Responsibilities
- Provide state & local income/franchise tax consulting and compliance services to a diverse client base operating in numerous states.
- Manage state voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), state tax due diligence, and state income/franchise tax audits.
- Advising clients on a variety of issues, including state income/franchise tax sourcing, state income/franchise tax nexus, and accounting for state income taxes.
- Review and/or prepare state income tax returns.
- Develop, maintain, and manage client relationships and expectations, monitor engagement economics, and coordinate staffing and workflow on multiple engagements, simultaneously.
- Manage deadlines and engagement budgets; keep Partners updated on engagement status.
- Continuously develop technical expertise; identify and research technical issues to assure compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations.
- Provide exceptional client service by maintaining an understanding of client operations and business objectives; apply this knowledge to serve clients in a consultative way and to identify additional potential business opportunities.
- Supervise and teach associates and interns, including delegation of assignments, detailed review of work, and evaluating performance.
- Use coaching and managerial skills to enhance the development and growth of others.
- Actively participate in business proposals, networking, and recruiting opportunities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Master’s degree preferred.
- Active CPA License.
- 5-7 years of state & local income/franchise tax compliance and consulting experience.
- Corporate & partnership state & local income/franchise tax experience.
- Advanced technical knowledge of state income/franchise tax law, regulations, and other guidance in Texas and other key states.
- Strong communication skills; ability to interact with a broad range of individuals.
- Strong professional presence and leadership skills; ability to mentor and develop staff.
- Experience building and maintaining excellent client relationships, identifying value-added services, and expanding books of business.
Qualifications
- Experience in state & local income/franchise tax compliance and consulting.
- Technical knowledge of state income/franchise tax law, regulations, and other guidance in Texas and other key states.
