Job Summary

A Tax Manager, State and Local Tax advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. They also market, network, and develop new business opportunities, providing SALT expertise to clients. They research, analyze, and prepare tax returns, draft tax documents, and represent clients in tax disputes.

Job Duties

  • Researches complex tax situations and compiles reports based on research findings.
  • Reviews and analyzes tax returns to identify significant state tax issues.
  • Provides responses to notices from state taxing authorities and supports exam teams.
  • Drafts tax memorandums, tax opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.
  • Determines tax planning processes and ensures tax engagement letters are adopted.
  • Assists in developing consultative selling strategies and manages client expectations.
  • Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues.
  • Utilizes tax software such as GoSystems and tax research databases.
  • Provides technical client service to multi-state companies with state and local tax issues.
  • Drafts technical memoranda and negotiates settlements and representations.
  • Develops new or improved tax strategies and suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Supervises the day-to-day workload of SALT Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements.
  • Evaluates the performance of SALT Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns and assists in their professional development.
  • Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for SALT Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
  • Acts as a career advisor to SALT Senior Associates and Associates, as appropriate.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., preferred.
  • Four (4) years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience or legal professional services, or equivalent through an advanced degree program.
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis.
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions.
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships.
  • CPA certification or other relevant certification, preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and research skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards to ensure effective and efficient delivery of tax services.
  • Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause / effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential tax issues.
  • Individual salaries are determined after considering numerous factors including qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
