About the Role
The Staff Accountant supports Schnabel’s accounting, tax compliance, cash management, and reconciliation functions for a nationwide specialty geotechnical construction contractor. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this position is responsible for accurate recurring filings, reconciliations, and financial support activities while working collaboratively with the accounting team and other internal stakeholders. The role offers hands-on experience in multi-state accounting, compliance, and construction finance within a collaborative, safety-focused organization known for technical excellence, innovation, and operational execution.

Responsibilities
- Prepare and file weekly, monthly, and quarterly state and local payroll withholding, unemployment, sales and use tax, privilege tax, and related compliance filings for multiple states.
- Maintain state and local business licenses, contractor licenses, and related compliance records.
- Prepare bank reconciliations and maintain the daily cash schedule.
- Maintain credit card coding records and reconcile employee company credit card activity.
- Assist with account reconciliations, journal entry support, and month-end close activities as assigned.
- Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for audit, tax, and internal reporting requests.
- Maintain organized records and support process improvements for recurring accounting and compliance activities.
- Support the company’s safety and risk management objectives by adhering to established procedures, proactively identifying and addressing potential risks, and contributing to the achievement of safety goals through the use of metrics and continuous improvement efforts.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s (preferred) or associate’s degree in Accounting.
- 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction.
- Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and organization.
- Ability to learn quickly and independently manage recurring deadlines and follow established procedures.
- Strong communication skills.
- Professionalism and discretion when handling confidential financial information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working for a multi-state construction contractor.
- Experience preparing payroll tax and state sales and use tax filings.
- Knowledge of Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate accounting software.
- Familiarity with payroll tax, sales and use tax, business licensing, and contractor licensing requirements.
- Experience reconciling bank accounts and general ledger accounts.
Pay
Base Salary: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00 depending on experience.
