Sarmal, Inc. is a San Diego–based biotechnology company developing next-generation genomics and molecular detection platforms. Our work integrates molecular biology, chemistry, and advanced systems engineering to enable faster, more precise, and more accessible genomic insights. We are a highly collaborative, R&D-driven team operating in a fast-paced, early-stage environment.

About the role

A Research Associate to Senior Research Associate in Molecular Biology is an experienced, hands-on scientist who independently executes and optimizes molecular assays, supports detection-focused research through rigorous experimentation and reagent development, and contributes technical expertise to cross-functional teams with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and optimize molecular biology experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Perform qPCR assays, including assay design, optimization, standard curve generation, and efficiency analysis.
  • Carry out nucleic acid extraction from diverse biological matrices using manual and kit-based methods.
  • Execute DNA and RNA quantification using spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods (e.g., NanoDrop, Qubit).
  • Generate high-quality, reproducible data to support research, development, and detection-focused workflows.
  • Prepare, optimize, and maintain buffers, reagents, and working solutions, with attention to stability, compatibility, and performance.
  • Perform reagent performance comparisons, including shelf-life and stress testing.
  • Document reagent and buffer formulations, preparation methods, and defined QC acceptance criteria.
  • Ensure consistent reagent quality and performance across experiments and studies.
  • Handle biological samples (e.g., blood, bodily fluids, tissues) following best laboratory practices.
  • Maintain sample integrity through proper storage, labeling, tracking, and documentation.
  • Analyze experimental data using appropriate software tools and basic statistical methods.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and compliant documentation, including lab notebooks, protocols, and technical reports.
  • Summarize experimental findings clearly for internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to SOP development, protocol updates, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Maintain laboratory organization, equipment readiness, and inventory awareness.
  • Follow established quality practices (GLP-like rigor where applicable).
  • Proactively troubleshoot equipment, assay, or process-related issues.
  • Identify opportunities to improve experimental workflows, consistency, efficiency, or data quality.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and operations teams to advance project goals.
  • Contribute practical, data-driven insights to experimental planning and technical decision-making.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on expertise in molecular biology techniques, with demonstrated proficiency in qPCR assay development, optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven ability to evaluate primer/probe performance, amplification efficiency, inhibition, sensitivity, and assay robustness.
  • Solid experience in nucleic acid extraction from diverse biological sample types, with awareness of pre-analytical variables affecting detection outcomes.
  • Proficiency in DNA/RNA quantification using spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods, including interpretation of purity and quality metrics.
  • Demonstrated experience in buffer, reagent, and solution preparation, formulation optimization, and performance consistency testing.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot complex experimental challenges and apply data-driven solutions.
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills, with the ability to clearly communicate results to scientific and cross-functional audiences.
  • Consistent record of maintaining experimental rigor, reproducibility, accurate documentation, and compliance with quality standards.
  • Competence in biological sample handling, processing, storage, contamination control, and biosafety best practices.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet project timelines with minimal supervision.
  • Proven collaborative skills and effectiveness working across research, engineering, and operations teams.
  • Microscopy experience (optional), including basic imaging or sample assessment, as relevant to project needs.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, or a related life sciences discipline required. Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field preferred and may offset required years of industry experience. Equivalent combination of education and hands-on laboratory experience will be considered.

  • Research Associate (RA): 2–4 years of hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology or related disciplines.
  • Senior Research Associate (Sr. RA): 4–7+ years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in an industry, diagnostics, or applied research setting.

Industry experience in biotechnology, diagnostics, life sciences, or a regulated research environment is strongly preferred.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Company-paid life insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Generous paid time off
  • Access to additional voluntary benefits, employee perks, and discount programs

Pay

$72,000 - $85,000 a year. The anticipated salary range for this position is $72,000 – $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, relevant experience, skill set, and internal equity considerations.
