Sr. Industrial Design Engineer, GES NA Ops Engineering

About the role

Amazon is searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Industrial Design Engineer (IDE) to lead the cross-functional design and deployment of innovative solutions in our world-class fulfillment centers and logistics systems. In this role, you will take ownership of solving complex industry problems by designing and implementing groundbreaking solutions for automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing. This position requires strong technical problem-solving and project management skills in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment.

You will collaborate with internal and external technical teams to define ambiguous problem statements, influence global teams, write technical specifications, evaluate equipment, develop business requirements, and scale new technologies. This role involves managing multiple large, high-visibility programs, generating multiyear budgets, and driving execution excellence. Up to 50% travel is required, and candidates should live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of a corporate office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Responsibilities

• Drive the technical strategy for a material handling equipment lifecycle organization in partnership with WWDE, Operations Engineering, and strategic suppliers.
• Provide program leadership and technological integration across multiple engineering teams, serving as the single-threaded leader between engineering, operations, and RME partners.
• Lead cross-functional communications and strategic planning for material technological deployment, introduce new tech products, determine KPIs, and drive standardization initiatives.
• Manage multiple large, highly complex programs through the development and deployment lifecycle, ensuring execution excellence and creating mechanisms to increase velocity while maintaining quality.
• Deeply understand business and technical requirements for product integration from mechanical, electrical, and controls functions.
• Critique and debate technical designs, judge technical viability, and tailor communication for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Work with Operations, Engineering, and Data Science Leadership teams to manage organizational strategy and project priority, ensuring resources focus on the most impactful projects.
• Define program/project scope and technical/business requirements, relaying them concisely to design, firm, and field engineering teams.
• Evaluate solutions and make decisions balancing business value and technology risk.
• Help teams make appropriate trade-offs by considering business goals, throughput expectations, quality requirements, efficiency, maintainability, and operability.
• Identify standards and drive consistent application of engineering changes across North America.
• Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center (FC) leadership and operations teams, including Industrial Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, and Process Engineering stakeholders.
• Communicate and present program status to Directors of Engineering and Operations.
• Data mine and transform raw thoughts into clear technical documentation.
• Travel up to 50% to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years of experience in project management disciplines, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, and critical path management.
• Experience in Design/Innovation, research & development, manufacturing, process, industrial engineering, or related work.
• Strong technical background in automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
• Experience using Lean Process Improvement, Six Sigma methodologies, or related performance metrics to increase efficiency in forecasting, planning, optimization, and logistics.
• Experience prioritizing and delivering projects on time in a fast-moving environment.
• Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partnering with people at all levels within an organization.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, with a passion for delivering exceptional service.
• Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions, evaluate outcomes, and make data-driven decisions.
• Experience in ownership of projects, communicating timelines, and executing independently.
• Fluency in business or technical software like MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
• Knowledge of system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, electronic system design, and decision-making.
• Experience designing or implementing integrated automation solutions such as material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
• Six-Sigma or equivalent certification.
• Prior success in driving execution of large-scale project plans with multiple teams in support of business goals.

Pay

The base salary range for this position varies by location:

• San Francisco, CA: $152,000 - $205,600 USD annually.
• Boston, MA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• New York, NY: $145,300 - $196,600 USD annually.
• Nashville, TN: $125,500 - $169,800 USD annually.
• Austin, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Houston, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Irving, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Arlington, VA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Bellevue, WA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.

Schedule

• Up to 50% travel required.

The Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Lifecycle Management Team ensures the success of First and Middle Mile operations pre- and post-Go-Live. This team provides comprehensive support throughout the entire lifecycle of MHE installations, focusing on site qualification, Final Acceptance, Project Closeout, and continuous improvement initiatives.
