Sr. Industrial Design Engineer, GES NA Ops Engineering

About the role

Amazon is seeking an innovative and solutions-oriented Industrial Design Engineer (IDE) to lead the cross-functional design and deployment of cutting-edge solutions in our world-class fulfillment centers and logistics systems. This role involves solving complex industry challenges by designing and implementing automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, robotics, and high-speed manufacturing systems. You will work in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment, leveraging strong technical problem-solving and project management skills to drive impactful solutions.

In this position, you will collaborate with internal and external technical teams to define problem statements, influence global teams, develop technical specifications, evaluate equipment, and manage large, high-visibility programs. The role requires up to 50% travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Responsibilities

• Drive the technical strategy for material handling equipment lifecycle in partnership with WWDE, Operations Engineering, and strategic suppliers.
• Provide program leadership and technological integration across multiple engineering teams, serving as the single-threaded leader between engineering, operations, and RME partners.
• Lead cross-functional communications and strategic planning for material technological deployment, including introducing new tech products, determining KPIs, and driving standardization initiatives.
• Manage multiple large, highly complex programs through the development and deployment lifecycle, ensuring execution excellence and process velocity while maintaining quality.
• Deeply understand business and technical requirements for product integration across mechanical, electrical, and controls functions.
• Critique and debate technical designs, assess technical viability, and tailor communication for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, and Data Science Leadership to align strategy and prioritize resources for high-impact projects.
• Define program/project scope, technical/business requirements, and relay them concisely to design, firm, and field engineering teams.
• Evaluate solutions and make decisions balancing business value and technology risk.
• Help teams make trade-offs by considering business goals, throughput expectations, quality requirements, efficiency, maintainability, and operability.
• Identify and drive consistent application of engineering standards across North America.
• Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center leadership and operations teams, including Industrial Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, and Process Engineering stakeholders.
• Communicate and present program status to Directors of Engineering and Operations.
• Transform raw data and ideas into clear technical documentation.
• Travel up to 50% to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years of experience in design/innovation, research & development, manufacturing, process, industrial engineering, or related work.
• 5+ years of project management experience, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, and critical path management.
• Strong technical background in automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
• Experience using Lean Process Improvement, Six Sigma methodologies, or related performance metrics to increase efficiency in forecasting, planning, optimization, and logistics.
• Proven ability to prioritize and deliver projects on time in a fast-moving environment.
• Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partnering with people at all organizational levels.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, with a passion for delivering exceptional service.
• Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a deadline-driven environment.
• Experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions, evaluate outcomes, and make data-driven decisions.
• Experience in project ownership, communicating timelines, and executing independently.
• Proficiency in business or technical software such as MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
• Knowledge of system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, electronic system design, and decision-making.
• Experience designing or implementing integrated automation solutions such as material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
• Six-Sigma or equivalent certification.
• Experience driving execution of large-scale project plans with multiple teams in support of business goals.

Pay

The base salary range for this position varies by location:

• San Francisco, CA: $152,000 - $205,600 USD annually.
• Boston, MA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• New York, NY: $145,300 - $196,600 USD annually.
• Nashville, TN: $125,500 - $169,800 USD annually.
• Austin, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Houston, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Irving, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Arlington, VA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Bellevue, WA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.

About the Team

The Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Lifecycle Management Team ensures the success of First and Middle Mile operations pre- and post-go-live. This team provides comprehensive support throughout the entire lifecycle of MHE installations, focusing on site qualification, Final Acceptance, Project Closeout, and continuous improvement initiatives.
