About the Role
This is a specialized, part-time recreation position focused on conducting a variety of programming opportunities, including staffing a community center, open-gym programs, evening recreation programs, and summer enrichment programs. The role involves leadership in the Park Department's recreational programs and other seasonal special events, performed under supervision while adhering to standard recreational practices and procedures. Supervision of other seasonal recreational personnel is also required.
Responsibilities
- Plans and develops city-wide recreational programs for special events, including operating a community center and managing summer, open-gym, and evening recreation programs.
- Organizes and coordinates special recreational events, such as summer and evening gym programs, on a city-wide basis.
- Organizes and instructs volunteer and neighborhood groups and individuals assisting in these programs.
- Evaluates programs, makes recommendations, requisitions necessary equipment and supplies, schedules use of the community center, and provides periodic activity reports.
- Provides direct supervision of Head Recreation Leaders in summer, open-gym, and evening recreation programs.
- Collaborates with school department employees, including administrators, staff, and custodians.
- Collects and manages all pertinent program data, including registration forms, sign-in sheets, maintenance forms, and employee/non-employee injury forms.
- Maintains a safe environment for both participants and staff.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements
- Considerable knowledge of techniques, methods, materials, and equipment involved in conducting city-wide recreation programs and special events.
- Considerable knowledge of scheduling community center use and maintaining open space.
- Some knowledge of rules and regulations governing park facility and equipment conduct.
- Basic knowledge of first aid.
- Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate varied programs of special events and seasonal programming.
- Ability to enforce facility rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with recreational personnel and facility users.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse groups, including students, professionals, school administrators, and community-based organizations.
- Skill in performing and teaching recreational activities.
Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of experience in planning, organizing, and evaluating special events and seasonal programs.
- Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
- Work experience in recreation or a related field.
