Sr Engineering Manager - Workforce Management
About the role
The Senior Engineering Manager (SEM) leads a team of engineers responsible for building, integrating, and operating Workforce Management solutions that support critical functions such as time capture, labor forecasting, and workforce scheduling. This includes ownership of both UKG platform capabilities and custom-built extensions, such as SmartClocks and supporting services, to deliver a cohesive and scalable end-to-end solution.
Responsibilities
- Lead product teams focused on implementing and extending UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group) Workforce Management capabilities, including forecasting, scheduling, and core timekeeping.
- Build strategic extensions beyond the UKG platform to meet Target’s scale and experience needs.
- Combine UKG capabilities with custom engineering, including Java and Spring Boot services, to enable seamless integrations, enhance user experiences, and deliver differentiated capabilities.
- Ensure interoperability across systems such as Workday, and contribute to a modern, decoupled workforce management ecosystem.
- Shape architectural direction, balance UKG platform capabilities with targeted open-source development, exercise strong technical judgment on where to extend versus adopt, and deliver reliably in a complex, highly integrated environment.
- Partner closely with Product, HR stakeholders, and vendor teams, and represent the team in cross-functional planning and architecture discussions.
Requirements
- Four-year degree or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of experience in software development and team management
- Expertise in Java programming languages
- Experience evaluating new technologies and participating in decision-making, considering factors such as viability within Target’s technical environment, compliance requirements, approved tech status, maintainability, and cost of ownership
- Proven ability to deliver high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure solutions with broad impact
- Experience leading functional design and architecture discussions, with an understanding of process flows and system diagrams to support design decisions
- Provides technical oversight and coaching to others in resolving technical issues

The Senior Engineering Manager will lead product teams focused on implementing and extending UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group) Workforce Management capabilities, including forecasting, scheduling, and core timekeeping.
About You
Four-year degree or equivalent experience
10+ years of experience in software development and team management
Expertise in Java programming languages
Experience evaluating new technologies and participating in decision-making, considering factors such as viability within Target’s technical environment, compliance requirements, approved tech status, maintainability, and cost of ownership
Proven ability to deliver high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure solutions with broad impact
Experience leading functional design and architecture discussions, with an understanding of process flows and system diagrams to support design decisions
Provides technical oversight and coaching to others in resolving technical issues
Pay
The pay range is $132,000.00 - $238,000.00 Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and in some instances may include education, work experience and certifications.
Schedule
This role operates as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
