Sr. Engineering Manager
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Sr. Engineering Manager to lead and develop a growing team of software engineers supporting a broad digital product portfolio. This position will oversee customer-facing e-commerce systems as well as internal business applications and web-based platforms. The ideal candidate combines strong people leadership with hands-on technical credibility. This individual will be responsible for improving team performance, strengthening engineering processes, guiding technical decisions, and creating an environment built on accountability, trust, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers.
- Manage day-to-day engineering activities while supporting the team’s long-term professional development.
- Improve engineering processes, team operations, delivery practices, and overall team effectiveness.
- Build a positive engineering culture centered on trust, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Remain technically involved by participating in architecture discussions, code reviews, solution design, and implementation decisions.
- Provide technical guidance and help engineers select appropriate technologies and development approaches.
- Partner with product management and business stakeholders to establish priorities, clarify requirements, and align engineering work with organizational goals.
- Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term platform stability, scalability, and maintainability.
- Identify operational, technical, and organizational gaps and implement thoughtful improvements.
- Communicate project status, technical considerations, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Support customer-facing e-commerce platforms and internal applications used by retail, wholesale, and corporate teams.
- Help establish engineering standards, documentation practices, development workflows, and performance expectations.
- Evaluate opportunities to responsibly incorporate artificial intelligence and automation into engineering workflows.
Required Qualifications
- Seven or more years of professional software engineering experience.
- At least three years of experience directly managing software engineers.
- Demonstrated success leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams.
- Strong technical background with the ability to contribute meaningfully to architecture and implementation decisions.
- Experience managing engineers within an Agile software development environment.
- Experience improving team performance, morale, accountability, and operational effectiveness.
- Strong understanding of modern software development practices, architecture principles, code quality, and application delivery.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to communicate effectively with individual contributors, cross-functional partners, and senior executives.
- Strong judgment and the ability to introduce change while maintaining team trust and engagement.
- Experience supporting e-commerce platforms, retail technology, internal applications, or enterprise web products.
- Experience rebuilding or scaling engineering teams operating in environments with low morale, limited trust, or inconsistent processes.
- Experience developing or contributing to an organization-wide artificial intelligence adoption strategy.
- Understanding of where artificial intelligence can appropriately support engineering workflows, development productivity, testing, documentation, and operational processes.
Leadership Expectations
The Senior Engineering Manager will serve as a bridge between senior leadership and the engineering team. This person must be capable of translating strategic priorities into clear technical direction while also representing the team’s needs, risks, and recommendations to leadership. Successful candidates will be comfortable operating at both strategic and tactical levels. They will stay close enough to the technical work to provide meaningful guidance while focusing primarily on building a healthier, faster, and more effective engineering organization.
