About the role

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, reliability, and modernization of Amtrak-owned traction power conversion facilities and coordinating maintenance activities at utility-owned conversion facilities across the Northeast Corridor. This position leads capital improvement projects and provides technical expertise for traction power conversion equipment and associated infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead and execute capital improvement and maintenance programs for traction power conversion equipment, including Static Frequency Converters, transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, PLCs, and protective relays.
• Manage and report project performance, including scope, schedule, budget, forecasting, risk mitigation, and resource planning.
• Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for substation electrical equipment and frequency converter systems, providing technical leadership and guidance across the organization.
• Lead technical investigations and root cause analyses of traction power system failures, outages, and equipment performance issues.
• Provide technical training to employees on the maintenance and troubleshooting of the frequency converters and ancillary equipment.
• Perform field audits and provide expert advice to ensure compliance with engineering practices and policies.
• Ensure safe execution of maintenance, testing, commissioning, and capital project activities through effective planning and hazard mitigation.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship on electrical safety practices, emergency response, and continuous safety improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with Electric Traction Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Design, and external utility partners to ensure a safe and reliable power network.
• Respond to emergency calls involving the traction power frequency converters.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• 6 years of relevant experience required; 8+ years preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
• Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Experience with NERC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, and utility industry standards preferred.

Skills

• Demonstrated experience with railroad electric traction systems, traction power substations, or utility power systems.
• Working knowledge of frequency converter technologies, protective relaying, PLC systems, transformers, switchgear, and medium/high-voltage equipment.
• Experience in performing equipment troubleshooting, failure analysis, commissioning, testing, and maintenance planning.
• Experience managing engineering or capital projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and contractor coordination.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and engineering software tools; experience with CAD, databases, and PLC programming is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong technical writing, presentation, and documentation skills.
• Proven ability to collaborate across operations, maintenance, engineering, and external utility organizations.

Work Environment

Up to 20% travel is expected.

Pay

The target salary for this role is $130,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, and certifications. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
