About the role

The Design Review Senior Engineer manages the design review process for major capital in-house projects and external third-party projects, ensuring compliance with Amtrak Corporate and Engineering Department standards, policies, and procedures. This role is part of the Design Management Team focused on major stations and Amtrak main facilities, supporting new Airo train fleet equipment and maintenance-of-way fleet equipment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and participate in multi-discipline technical reviews of design documents (track, communications & signals, electric traction, structures).
• Work closely with internal groups within Capital Delivery Engineering Department, as well as other departments like IMCS, Operations, Mechanical, Real Estate, Transportation, Environmental Health & Safety.
• Acquire and/or develop a working knowledge of Amtrak business systems, standard procedures, Engineering Practices, existing agreements with external entities, and industry standards and best practices.
• Work with the Design/Operations team and Capital Delivery Project Managers to estimate durations and labor resources for design review processes and monitor schedules.
• Coordinate with Capital Delivery Project Managers and the Third-Party Agreements team to ensure timely completion of design reviews and project schedules.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent experience.
• Plus 6 years of relevant experience, plus 8+ years preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical), Architecture, or related field.
• Strong understanding of Amtrak-maintained territory and operations.
• Demonstrated experience with multi-discipline railroad design, design review, and/or design coordination/administration.
• Knowledge of building codes and standards, railroad construction standards, methods, and practices.
• Familiarity with railroad operations and procedures.
• Experience with design and submission review processes, particularly in the railroad environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam/Revu, and Adobe Acrobat Suite.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong planning, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Understanding of multi-discipline railroad infrastructure (track, electric traction, communications & signals, structures, stations, and facilities).

Skills and Abilities

• Experience working with outside/third-party projects.
• Project management: understanding contracts, budgets, schedules, scope of works, etc.
• Design Bid Build and Design Build construction delivery.
• Reading design documents: drawings, specifications, design reports, shop drawings, product data, etc.
• Building codes and standards (International Building Codes, local state/city codes, etc.).
• Railroad construction standards, methods, and practices.
• Railroad operations and procedures.
• Design and submission review process, preferably in the railroad environment.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong planning, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Familiarity with multi-discipline railroad infrastructure (track, electric traction, communications & signals, structures, stations, and facilities).

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

Primarily office-based environment. Occasional railroad right-of-way and/or project site visits may be required.

Pay and Benefits

The salary/hourly range is $103,700.00 – $134,460.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Additional incentive and pay programs may be offered.
