About the role

FanSided is looking for a creative, knowledgeable sports writer to join the editorial team and deliver timely, engaging coverage across our NBA or NHL network. This role is ideal for someone who lives and breathes sports, understands fan conversations, and can quickly turn breaking news, trending storylines, rumors, games, and major league moments into compelling content. Your primary focus will be on either NBA or NHL coverage, depending on your expertise.

Responsibilities

• Write timely, engaging NBA or NHL content, including breaking news, analysis, opinion pieces, game coverage, trending topics, and feature stories.
• Maintain a high-volume publishing schedule, producing 25–35 articles per week (approximately 120–150 pieces per month).
• Create content typically ranging from 500–700 words, with opportunities for longer-form features as needed.
• Stay closely connected to major storylines, players, teams, trades, rumors, games, and fan conversations to identify compelling angles.
• Write from a fan-first perspective, tailoring content to the interests of different teams and fan bases.
• Use SEO, audience data, social trends, and editorial guidance to strengthen story selection, headlines, and reach.
• Collaborate with editors, writers, and team leadership to execute content strategies and meet editorial goals.
• Help build engaged fan communities across FanSided sites and social platforms while maintaining editorial standards.
• Be flexible during key sports moments, including games, playoffs, trades, free agency, and breaking news.

Requirements

• 1+ years of digital sports writing or editorial experience covering the NBA or NHL.
• Deep knowledge and genuine passion for your area of expertise (NBA or NHL).
• Strong understanding of teams, players, storylines, league trends, and fan conversations.
• A confident, engaging writing voice with the ability to produce clean, compelling content in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to manage a high-volume publishing schedule and pivot quickly for breaking news.
• Basic understanding of SEO, audience development, and social media strategies.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a self-motivated approach to remote work.
• Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and peak news cycles.

Bonus Qualifications

• Experience creating short-form vertical content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts.
• Newsletter writing experience.
• Podcasting or other multimedia experience.
• Experience engaging directly with sports communities via social media, comments, or live chats.

Pay

The expected salary range for this position is $50,000 to $55,000 annually, based on skills, experience, and location.
