About the Role
The Speech Therapist plans, organizes, and implements an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Work is performed under the supervision of the principal.
Responsibilities
- Creates an instructional environment that is attractive, safe, supportive, and conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity, interest, and abilities of students. Encourages risk-taking, ensures students feel free to contribute ideas, and maintains respectful, polite interactions.
- Prepares and maintains an instructional environment with accessible, well-conditioned materials, including educational bulletin boards, web pages, parent/student newsletters, and other communication tools.
- Teaches District-approved curriculum and communicates clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Employs the District's philosophy of education, instructional goals, and performance expectations through instruction and action.
- Prepares lesson plans and delivers instructional materials that facilitate active learning through a speech and language lens.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials using a variety of techniques and strategies to meet diverse student aptitudes, interests, and abilities, including technology and whole-group/small-group learning.
- Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
- Designs cognitively challenging activities aligned with standards to engage students.
- Manages learning time effectively to maximize student achievement and engagement.
- Completes evaluations in speech and language using best practices and nationally normed assessments.
- Reflects on practice and student work to improve instruction and inform future lessons.
- Assesses students' academic and social growth regularly, maintains records, prepares progress reports, and communicates with parents as needed.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by District policy, administrative policy, and Pennsylvania law.
- Monitors student progress toward learning objectives and communicates expectations and progress to students.
- Seeks support from district specialists when concerns about student progress arise.
- Cooperates with other staff members to develop strategies for addressing student health, attitude, and learning challenges.
- Follows the District's multi-tiered system of supports and develops strategies for individual education plans.
- Establishes and enforces a fair and consistent code of conduct for the classroom.
- Provides clear behavior expectations and monitors student behavior throughout the school.
- Communicates regularly with parents/guardians to foster partnerships around student learning through newsletters, calls, conferences, and other means.
- Attends IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings for student assessment and compliance with federal/state laws.
- Attends district, department, and faculty meetings, and serves on committees as required.
- Participates in school-sponsored activities such as back-to-school night, open house, science fairs, math competitions, arts programs, and other student activities.
- Engages in curriculum-related and programmatic activities, including field trips or overnight camping trips historically part of the school curriculum.
- Participates in in-services, staff development, and staff meetings as required.
- Maintains an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies District and personal expectations.
- Provides verbal or written recommendations for student placement, course selection, awards, scholarships, and other academic or extracurricular pursuits when requested.
- Establishes community partnerships to support the academic program.
- Demonstrates professionalism and adheres to the Professional Code of Conduct.
- Updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
- Prepares required reports on students and activities.
- Completes and maintains required IDEA paperwork as mandated by law.
- Serves as a case manager and point of contact for special education students in the building.
- Implements IEPs, complies with all legal documents, and ensures individual student needs are met.
- Performs duties in compliance with state, federal, and grant requirements.
- Follows established policies and procedures for reporting incidents (e.g., child abuse, substance abuse, harassment, and violence).
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Administration.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology (completion of an approved Pennsylvania Speech/Language Impaired PK-12 program).
- Pennsylvania speech-language pathology state license.
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC).
- Practicum experience with school-aged children.
- Pennsylvania Certificate in one of the following teaching certifications: Educational Specialist I or Instructional I.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to report to work regularly and punctually.
- Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
- Meets professional teacher education requirements of the school, District, and state.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate computers and office equipment, and occasionally lift/move up to 20 pounds.
- Successfully completes and maintains compliance with federal and state background and criminal record checks.
- Adheres to all local, state, federal, and school code requirements for employment.
Pay
Salary Range: $60,325–$116,695
Schedule
Full-time, 7.5 hours/day, 10 months (school year).
