SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST

Carshalton College · College, AK · 4 days ago
Full-time

About the role

We encourage independence in all our learners and support them to achieve their full potential through a high-quality curriculum to develop skills in living, work, community, and communication. These skills are planned to reflect individual learners' Educational and Health Care Plan target outcomes.

The therapy department at South Thames College Group embraces a neurodiversity-affirming, strength-based approach, rather than an impairment-based and medical model approach. This means we accept, validate, and learn from a student’s developmental differences and aim to provide support and accommodations that affirm their neurodivergent identity.

As our Speech and Language Therapist, you will play a vital role in supporting learners to access the curriculum of their choice. You will support students and teaching teams to manage their communication, social, and behavioral strengths and needs in various settings. You will carry out holistic Speech and Language Therapy assessments and person-centered interventions to help learners access and develop functional skills across the curriculum. You will understand the impact of communication difficulties on a person’s function and behavior and support teaching teams to transfer skills developed at college to learners’ home, community, and work settings.

Responsibilities

  • Support learners to access their chosen curriculum by addressing communication, social, and behavioral needs.
  • Conduct holistic Speech and Language Therapy assessments and implement person-centered interventions.
  • Develop functional skills across the curriculum and ensure transferability to home, community, and work environments.
  • Write reports, support plans, and communication guidelines for diverse audiences and needs.
  • Collaborate with teaching teams to manage learners' strengths and needs in different environmental settings.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council.
  • Experience assessing learners with Learning Disabilities and Autism, both formally and informally.
  • Experience devising and implementing evidence-based interventions for learners with varied communication profiles.
  • Knowledge of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and communication/learning strategies for this client group.

Qualifications

  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (desirable).
  • Awareness of the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (desirable).

Benefits

  • Generous annual leave: 27 days plus up to 8 additional days over Christmas/New Year and 5 days Wellbeing leave, in addition to Bank Holiday entitlement.
  • Excellent pension scheme with significant employer contribution (Teachers Pensions or Local Government Pension Scheme).
  • Subsidised sports facilities.
  • Professional development and training opportunities.
  • Salary sacrifice cycle-to-work scheme.

Schedule

The post is based primarily at Carshalton and Merton College, though you may be required to travel to and work from other South Thames Colleges Group sites.

Closing date for applications: 7th September 2026.
