About the role
The Speech and Language Pathologist at LOGAN provides evaluations and treatments for children with various needs, including language abilities, cognitive skills, feeding skills, and oral motor functioning. They also consult with other professionals and families about the results of evaluations and treatment progress.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate children on an individual basis and communicate results as directed.
- Determine each child’s assistive technology needs, such as adaptive toys and switches, feeding devices, oral motor needs, and augmentative communication.
- Conduct individual therapy to maintain or enhance speech and language abilities, or train to improve feeding and pre-feeding skills.
- Facilitate the growth of the child's parents as teachers by providing resources and support.
- Plan instructional activities and home programs for parents and caregivers in community settings.
- Provide evaluations in various settings to determine program needs for infants and toddlers.
- Communicate effectively with other staff, agencies, and community programs, as well as children and their parents/guardians.
- Keep daily progress notes, write discharge summaries, and complete exit skills inventories for children transitioning to the school system.
- Participate in case conferences, staff meetings, parent group meetings, and writing quarterly reports.
- Attend appropriate workshops and conferences to increase professional effectiveness and meet the 30-hour minimum requirement by First Steps.
- Furnish required monthly statistics and provide reports and written programs to families and other professionals following First Steps guidelines.
- Respect the confidentiality and cultural diversity of the child and their family, in accordance with LOGAN policies.
- May be asked to serve on a LOGAN committee addressing the internal operations of the agency.
- Collaborate with other First Steps staff and community agency personnel to develop appropriate outcomes for Individual Family Service Plans.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Speech and Language and licensure in the State of Indiana.
- One year of experience implementing therapy programs for special needs infants and toddlers, or college practicum work in developing appropriate activities and strategies for infants and toddlers.
- One year of experience using evaluation tools related to infants and toddlers.
- Ability to communicate with other appropriate staff, supervisor, and agency personnel.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children and families.
- Ability to provide developmental outcomes for each child and demonstrate activities and strategies to their families and/or caregivers.
- Ability to be creative in exploring new and innovative ideas.
- Ability to work independently and use sound judgment.
- Registered/licensed with the Health Professions Bureau of Indiana.
- Enrolled in the state of Indiana as a First Steps provider.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive to and from each visit, therapy session, or Individual Family Service Plan site.
