Specimen Technician

About the role

The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department. This position is critical to quality and customer satisfaction, requiring strong organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients. The role operates in a production environment with emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and departmental completion times. Exposure to biohazards necessitates good safety habits, and effective communication with all staff levels is essential.

This position focuses on accessioning, involving data entry while sitting for extended periods and adhering to productivity standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform functions such as A-station, pre-sort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting with accuracy and timeliness.
• Handle specimen types related to tests ordered by clients, adapting to daily changes in compliance regulations and customer demands.
• Maintain a neat and clean work area while adhering to core values, safety, and compliance policies.
• Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic, production-driven environment.
• Enter data at a rate of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
• Stand, lift, and move for the majority of the shift, with the ability to sit or stand for long periods.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic understanding of computers; preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or specimen processing.
• Previous laboratory experience or medical background (including medical terminology) is preferred.
• Previous hospital laboratory or production environment experience is a plus.
• Strong interpersonal skills fostering a positive environment.
• Ability to learn and understand compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily.

Schedule

Wednesday–Sunday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM (EST).
