Specialty Pharmacy Manager

Provide leadership and development to clinical pharmacists, pharmacy specialists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff within Specialty Pharmacy Services of the Department of Pharmaceutical Care. Responsible for operational oversight of specialty pharmacy services at UI Health Care Medical Center and decentralized specialty pharmacist support services. Serve as the department's primary subject matter expert for specialty pharmacy practice, operations, regulatory compliance, and accreditation standards.

About the role

The Specialty Pharmacy Manager leads the Specialty Pharmacy Quality Committee and partners with departmental and organizational leaders to advance strategic priorities, patient care services, and program growth. Training, orientation, mentorship, and ongoing support will be provided to develop administrative, operational, and specialty pharmacy leadership competencies. This role collaborates closely with pharmacy, ambulatory care, and health system leaders to promote safe, effective, and cost-conscious medication use while advancing organizational goals related to quality, patient safety, access to care, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa upon completion of orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning, delivery, and improvement of specialty pharmacy services, programs, and personnel.
• Assign tasks to staff and monitor individual and team progress.
• Coordinate overall ambulatory care pharmacy services and evaluate outcomes to maximize productivity, clinical outcomes, and financial impact.
• Collaborate with ambulatory care pharmacy managers to integrate clinical pharmacy services with physicians, nursing, laboratory, and other personnel; develop and implement clinical pathways and therapeutic guidelines.
• Provide guidance and oversight for ambulatory care clinical pharmacy operations.
• Develop and implement staff competencies and credentialing within ambulatory care clinical pharmacy services.
• Ensure compliance with regulations related to pharmacy services.
• Foster an environment that encourages high performance and teamwork.
• Implement systems for patient care in collaboration with the pharmacy team and other departments.
• Educate clinic providers, staff, and external parties regarding ambulatory care pharmacy services.
• Serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents; provide didactic education at the College of Pharmacy.
• Evaluate problems and concerns identified by staff to create safe and effective solutions aligned with clinical service goals.
• Participate in developing, monitoring, and reporting pharmacy practice standards.
• Guide appropriate expenditure of time and resources for ambulatory care pharmacy services.
• Collaborate with leaders to identify high-priority outcomes actionable by pharmacists.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate new programs, services, and clinical/technical processes, including multidisciplinary initiatives.
• Act as the responsible authority for the UI Health Care Specialty Pharmacy Program and Specialty Quality Committee.
• Serve as the subject matter expert and primary contact for specialty pharmacy accreditation standards.
• Assist in the evaluation of new medication therapies and involve staff in quality improvement initiatives.
• Consult on medication safety and serve on standing committees as needed.
• Ensure system compliance with accreditation standards and regulations related to medication safety.
• Hire, develop, and manage staff performance; conduct evaluations and recommend improvement plans.
• Coordinate and lead team and staff meetings; ensure staff compliance with policies, laws, and regulations.
• Monitor progress of assignments and daily responsibilities; coach and discipline staff as necessary.
• Understand billing processes for take-home prescriptions and clinic-administered medications.
• Assist in developing mechanisms to monitor revenue integrity and gather information on drug utilization.
• Support standardized processes for medication assistance programs.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
• Current license or eligibility to be licensed as a Pharmacist by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
• Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Administration or Specialty Pharmacy Residency or minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a complex clinical pharmacy environment.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interest in ambulatory care and willingness to act as a preceptor.
• Professional experience working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications

• Job-related experience in specialty pharmacy.
• Experience leading multi-site teams.
• Master of Science in Pharmacy or healthcare/management-related advanced degree (e.g., MHA, MBA).
• Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management, and Epic electronic health record.
• Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification.
• Specialty pharmacy accreditation experience with Joint Commission, URAC, and/or ACHC.

Full-time, hybrid within Iowa.
