About the role
Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and behavioral objectives.
Responsibilities
- Affix strategies and techniques to foster independence, self-reliance and social skills.
- Assist instructional personnel in the delivery of lesson plans, presentation of learning materials, and conduct of instructional exercises.
- Maintain monitoring of student’s progress regarding individual educational plans and goals.
- Monitor and assist individual students and/or small groups of students with autism in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel.
- Utilize positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior.
- Assist in the management of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instruction level of children with autism.
- Monitor students during classroom activities, recesses, and field trips.
- Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional aids and media and computer-assisted instructional equipment.
- Assist in maintaining an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
- Depending on students’ needs, may assist students with basic personal care activities such as dressing, toileting or bathroom including catheterization, feeding and grooming.
- Use good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students and to assist in medical emergencies.
- May assist students on and off the bus as needed.
- May assist in administering a variety of tests and record results.
- Attend specialized training as required.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of college level coursework - 60 Credit Hours OR passing of examination Para-Pro Assessment.
- TEMPORARY POSITION: No.
- NUMBER OF MONTHS/DAYS: 12 Months - 261 Days.
- FULL TIME OR PART TIME: Full Time.
- ELIGIBLE FOR "STATE SHARE" OF BENEFITS: Yes.
- PENSION ELIGIBLE POSITION: Yes.

- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
- Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments. Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
Equipment
Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers. Use of medical and instructional devices as needed by student.
Travel Requirements
Travel between schools, or between schools and offices, may be required for certain positions.
Special Conditions of Employment

- New employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
