About the Role

The Paraeducator assists teachers in providing high-quality special education programs by supporting student instruction, interventions, and supervision. This role helps free teachers from routine tasks to focus on educational planning and delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in performing activities planned and initiated by the teacher.
  • Provide individual support with academic tasks, peer interactions, and school activities.
  • Supervise students in general education classrooms, resource rooms, playgrounds, lunchrooms, bathrooms, and other school or community settings.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans or student assistance plans developed by supervising teachers or the IEP team.
  • Prepare instructional materials and assist in entering data for computerized education programs and records.
  • Collect and maintain student performance data as directed by teachers.
  • Assist students with daily living skills and self-care as needed.
  • Report any problems or questions regarding assigned students and their educational programs to supervising teachers or administrators.
  • Follow all school district and Keystone Learning Services policies and regulations, including confidentiality of student information.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (required).
  • Preferred: Two years of related experience, especially with children.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with a diverse customer base.

Skills

  • Strong skills in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities in children.
  • Good rapport with parents, children, and staff.
  • Positive attitude toward individuals with disabilities and acceptance of individual differences in children.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form.

Work Environment

The role requires occasional physical demands, including:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Standing (sometimes for extended periods), walking (including extended distances, e.g., field trips), and using hands to handle objects or tools.

The job is performed in a generally hazard-free environment and involves approximately 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing.
