Special Investigator Assistant
About the role
The Bureau of Investigations within the Division of Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA) seeks Special Investigator Assistants to assist with criminal investigations involving violations of occupational safety and health standards, orders, special orders, and Section 25910 of the Health and Safety Code. These positions are available in Sacramento and Los Angeles.
Responsibilities
- Assist with criminal field investigations in an assigned geographical area involving violations of occupational safety and health standards, orders, special orders, and Section 25910 of the Health and Safety Code in which there is a serious injury or death involving occupational safety and health violations.
- Primarily assist with BOI cases in which there are Regulatory, General, and/or no citations issued to the employer.
- Provide assistance to the Special Investigators and Supervising Special Investigator I in the furtherance of a criminal investigation, including surveillance, evidence gathering, interviews, and processing a crime scene.
- Process, preserve, and collect evidence; obtain statements from witnesses, victims, and suspects; and prepare cases, including identifying suspects, recommending charges, and contacting Law Enforcement for referred case updates.
Requirements
Applicants must possess a valid California driver's license and be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. The position requires instate travel, including one to three night overnight trips within California, based on assignments, and as determined according to the needs of the Department. The incumbent works a minimum of 40 hours a week, over 50% in the field, which may require driving long distances at various hours of the day and night, bending, stooping, walking, and carrying investigative equipment and evidence. Incumbents, at incident scenes, are exposed to loud noises, dust, construction/manufacturing equipment, hazardous environments, bodily fluids, body parts, and deceased victims. While in the office, incumbents are in an air conditioned, high-rise building with elevator access, in a cubicle with artificial lighting.
