About the role

The Town of Shrewsbury’s Highway Division is seeking a motivated and reliable Special Equipment Operator to join our dedicated Public Works team!

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, snowplows, and other machinery used in highway maintenance and construction.
  • Perform road repairs, drainage installation, tree work, and storm cleanup.
  • Inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment, ensuring they are safe and ready to use.
  • Respond to public works and weather emergencies, including snow and ice operations.
  • Work collaboratively with contractors, residents, and other departments to complete public projects efficiently.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A Massachusetts Class D Driver's License, for Equipment Operator & Laborer positions.
  • A Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), for Equipment Operator.
  • A Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License: 1C, 2A, 4E, 4G, for Equipment Operator.
  • An OSHA 10 Certification.
  • Experience in public works, construction, or heavy equipment operation preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction safety standards.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and respond to emergency calls as needed.

Benefits

  • Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience & licensure in accordance with union agreements and Town policies.
  • Hours are conveniently 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, with overtime as required.
  • A daily 30-minute lunch as agreed upon by the Highway Supervisor.

Pay

  • This position is non-exempt and hourly pay ranges from $27.63 to $33.50, depending on licensure.

Schedule

  • Full-time position with hours of 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, with overtime as required.
