Special Education 1:1 Support Specialists
About the role
The New School of Montpelier (NSM) is a student-centered, employee-owned cooperative therapeutic school for students aged 5-22 and adults with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Our mission is to prepare individuals with unique and complex challenges for successful lives through evidence-based practices.
Responsibilities
- Support and follow through on individualized plans for young adult participants or students in community, life skills, and educational programs.
- Collaborate with educators and other support staff to meet the daily needs of participants and students by providing appropriate activities and learning experiences.
- Work with educators, special educators, speech-language pathologists, and program assistants in academic instruction and educational services.
- Implement strategies and interventions in behavior support.
- Aid in daily living tasks, support in the community, and vocational settings.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Life experience after high school and relevant work experience with children and/or people with disabilities preferred.
- Ability to participate in recreational activities such as biking, hiking, walking, swimming, PE classes, etc.
- Compliance with all NSM policies and procedures.
- Participation in required meetings and trainings.
- Assistance in academic instruction and educational services.
- Ability to respond to physical interventions.
- Valid driver's license, current vehicle inspection, and car insurance.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma.
- Preferred life experience after high school and successful experience working with children and/or people with disabilities.
Benefits
This position offers a pay plus benefits package totalling between $43,977 to $47,927 for the 2025–2026 school year, based on qualifications and experience. The package includes:

The pay range is $31,219 – $34,965, with a total pay plus benefits package increasing to $46,172 - $54,949 effective July 1, 2026.
