Temporary position located at various locations within the City of El Paso, TX. This role may lead to a permanent position with the City of El Paso.
About the Role
Under immediate supervision, attend and complete classroom and field training in the operation of Refuse Trucks and other related Solid Waste Equipment.
Responsibilities
- Attend training in solid waste truck driver functions, including:
- Personal protective equipment
- Safety and emergency practices
- Proper backing procedures
- Disposal procedures
- Performing pre/post trip inspections
- Defensive driving
- Departmental requirements, policies, and procedures
- Solid waste ordinance and standard operating procedures
- Traffic laws
- Planning and executing collection routes
- Public relations and customer service skills
Requirements
- One (1) year of experience operating light or medium trucks or related automotive equipment.
- Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.
- Incumbents of positions requiring a CDL or of a safety-sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing and may be required to pass physical qualification examinations in accordance with federal regulations.
- Ability to read and follow maps, perform basic math, and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and follow schedules.

- Accrual rates per pay period:
- 0 - 5 years of service: 3.70 hours (12 days per year)
- >5 - 15 years of service: 5.24 hours (17 days per year)
- >15 years of service: 6.16 hours (20 days per year)
- Sick Leave:
- Accrued in accordance with the Rules of the Civil Service Commission.
- Accident Leave:
- Applies to occupational injuries and diseases occurring on or after the adoption date of the ordinance.
- Pregnancy Leave:
- Treated the same as any other temporary physical disability.
- Use of accumulated sick leave, followed by unpaid leave or use of annual leave.
- Legal Holidays:
- New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Holiday, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and Employee's Birthday.
- Additional holidays may be designated by City Council.
Pay
$32,760.00 - $47,174.40 Annually
