About the Role
Supervise, assign, train, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for a variety of solid waste activities, services, and operations. Establish schedules and methods for providing assigned solid waste activities and ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures. Perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
Responsibilities
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for solid waste activities, services, and operations.
- Establish schedules and methods for providing assigned solid waste activities and services; identify resource needs, review needs with management, and allocate resources accordingly.
- Participate in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures; ensure compliance and recommend improvements.
- Recommend and assist in implementing goals and objectives; enforce approved policies and procedures.
- Perform technical and complex tasks of the work unit, including quality control and ensuring proper work and safety methods.
- Monitor and inspect assigned facilities; open, close, and secure facilities; schedule maintenance as needed.
- Maintain preventive maintenance schedules for tools and equipment; ensure adherence to schedules.
- Oversee landfill operations, including the movement of dirt for roads, slopes, and drainage.
- Ensure disposal operations comply with environmental rules and regulations.
- Participate in staff selection, training, and discipline procedures.
- Prepare and administer the solid waste budget; monitor expenditures and submit recommendations.
- Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.
- Monitor work activities related to dispatch, customer service, and code enforcement.
- May drive a boom truck in the absence of lower-level staff.
- Attend professional meetings; stay updated on trends in vehicle maintenance and solid waste management.
- Represent the Department and Section at meetings and hearings.
- Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, business administration, vehicle maintenance, or accounting.
- Five (5) years of solid waste experience in vehicle maintenance, collections, disposal, code enforcement, dispatch, administration, or Clean City program, including one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.
- Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B.
- Possession of a valid City Operator’s Permit (COP) within six (6) months of hire.
Working Conditions
- Office, shop, and field environments with exposure to disagreeable odors, hazardous chemicals, noise, dust, grease, fumes, and inclement weather.
Physical Requirements
- Maintain physical condition necessary for light to heavy lifting, carrying, prolonged standing, sitting, and walking.
