About the role

At Farmers Mutual Hail (FMH), our mission is simple: protect the livelihoods and legacies of America’s farmers through the complete farm insurance solutions we offer. As America’s Crop Insurance Company™, we’re headquartered in the U.S. and have been owned by the farmers we insure for over 125 years. Farmers Mutual Hail (located in West Des Moines, IA) is currently looking for a qualified undergraduate to join our 2027 Summer Internship Program. This is a paid internship starting Monday, May 17 through Friday, August 6, working up to 40 hours per week for the summer, with the potential to turn into a full-time, permanent position in the future. We are looking for currently-enrolled college students who are close to the West Des Moines area, as this is not a remote internship.

Requirements

• Currently-enrolled sophomore, junior or senior at an undergraduate college or university.
• Major in Computer Science or MIS; or a Math major who has taken technical college-level courses.
• May 2027 graduates are not eligible.
• Must be located near West Des Moines, IA (on‑site, not remote).
• Not eligible for sponsorship for work authorization; applicants requiring sponsorship cannot be requiring sponsorship cannot be considered.

Skills

• Exposure to Java (required)
• SQL queries
• Object‑Oriented Programming concepts (plus)

Responsibilities

• Evaluates, clarifies, and understands requirements, documents, and functional specifications.
• Codes software in accordance with specifications and requirements, using Java.
• Validates software; complies with specifications and requirements.
• Creates, updates, and maintains appropriate development documentation.
• Interacts/communicates with other IT department staff.
• Follows all IT department processes and procedures.
• Accomplishes other tasks and duties as assigned.
