About the role

The intermittent Social Worker is assigned to integrated clinical communities where a coverage need exists. The position primarily serves the inpatient and observation medical areas, surgical admits, Intensive Care Unit and Community Living Center Veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families.
  • Work with Veterans and families experiencing a wide range of complicated medical, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial problems.
  • Conduct thorough psychosocial assessments to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams and actively participate in treatment processes.
  • Advocate for Veterans when it serves their best interest.
  • Possess a working knowledge and experience in medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures.
  • Serve as a liaison between Veterans and/or their families and VA and community resources.
  • Assist other staff as needed and perform special assignments as directed.
  • Drive a government vehicle when necessary.

Requirements

Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Master's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited school.
  • Licensure or certification as a social worker at the independent practice level.

Grade Determinations: Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience in a clinical setting or a doctoral degree in social work.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to make appropriate referrals.
  • Independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions.
  • Understanding of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures.
  • Implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups.
  • Providing consultation services to new social workers and staff.

Physical Requirements: Pre-employment examination required.
