Social Service Assistant (Generalist)

About the role

The Oregon Department of Human Services seeks a Social Service Assistant to work in Springfield and/or Eugene offices. This position serves individuals and families in need, focusing on child welfare programs.

Responsibilities

• Ensure children's safety and well-being during visits and transport.
• Support emotional needs of children and others involved in cases.
• Keep accurate records, prepare court notes, and provide feedback.
• Implement and manage individual visitation agreements and safety plans.
• Plan visit schedules, locations, supervision levels, and safety measures.
• Communicate visitation expectations and respond to post-visit inquiries.

Requirements

• A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• One year of experience in human services or behavioral health settings.
• An associate degree in any field.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions

• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
• Work in-person in Springfield and/or Eugene, Oregon, in offices, homes, community sites, hospitals, and hotels.
• Occasional overnight travel for meetings, trainings, and case-related activities.
• Travel for transporting children and/or families/parents to appointments.
• Flexible schedule covering Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with additional hours during training.
• Frequent physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds and assisting children with car seats.
• Handling sensitive topics related to trauma, abuse, and crises, requiring a trauma-informed approach.
• Interacting with youth and adults who have experienced trauma and may have difficulty managing their emotions.
• Stressful situations requiring quick decision-making to ensure safety for self and others.
• Flexibility to work early or late when needed, including occasional weekend availability.
• Positive attitude toward change, ability to adjust quickly, and willingness to take on new responsibilities.

Background Checks and Requirements

• Criminal history and background check conducted after selection.
• Disqualification for adverse criminal history or background check.
