About the Role

The Burlington Mayor’s Office is offering an internship opportunity for students interested in social media, strategic communications, and municipal government. Interns will gain hands-on experience with City Government, interacting with various departments and supporting the communications operation in the Mayor’s office. This position will work closely with the Mayor’s office staff to determine strategic communications opportunities, create a social media strategy, and draft external communications.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Mayor’s Office staff to create a content calendar and identify opportunities to showcase the work of the Mayor’s Office through various social media channels.
  • Use Canva and/or other platforms to create graphics, videos, and other content for social media dissemination.
  • Draft language for social media posts that accurately convey information to the public using a professional tone to represent the Mayor and her Office.
  • Attend events with the Mayor and/or the Mayor’s Office, when possible, to capture content.
  • Compile a weekly News Roundup of all media mentions or appearances of the Mayor and members of the current administration and recommend what should be boosted on social media platforms.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support and work skillfully with people from all cultures and with those whose identities differ from your own.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidenced by trainings and professional development both at the individual and organizational levels.
  • Strong interest in community safety, housing, and climate issues.
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfort with social media platforms and basic content creation tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and engage respectfully with community members and professionals.
  • Prior experience using social media platforms including Instagram and Facebook.
  • Some experience using Canva or other graphic design tools preferred but not required.

Additional Information

This internship is unpaid and must be completed for academic credit. A Memorandum of Understanding agreement must be in place prior to the internship start date. The anticipated duration is 13 weeks at 10 hours per week, with up to one day remote work allowed per week.
