About the role

The LPN coordinates total patient care and education for an assigned number of patients. Patient assignments are based on acuity level, census, and staffing levels. The LPN works up to 40 hours per week and may rotate shifts.

Responsibilities

• Assist with patient orientation and preceptorship
• Document total care given and maintain patient charts
• Administer medication and treatments as prescribed
• Order, evaluate, and perform diagnostic tests
• Conduct physical examinations and monitor patients' health
• Monitor and change IV lines, check vital signs, and assess nonverbal cues
• Provide support, education, and advice to patients
• Ensure patient safety and advocate for patients
• Complete and assist with basic care needs
• Report and document irregularities/problems
• Maintain clinical competence and ensure adherence to standards of practice
• Administer medication safely following the 6 rights of medication administration
• Perform IV therapy accurately and monitor patient's level of consciousness
• Perform wound care according to hospital protocol
• Promote unit and organizational goals
• Participate in organizational committees and provide information on patient outcomes
• Support teamwork and reinforce professional behavior
• Maintain regulatory knowledge and provide kind, compassionate care

Requirements

The LPN must be able to work professionally, relate to peers, physicians, mid-level providers, administration, patients, and visitors. They must also be able to work shifts and float between departments as needed.

Qualifications

• Current Mississippi State Board of Nursing (MSBN) license
• Completion of a licensed practical nursing program
• Pass a pharmacology test
• Attend mandatory in-services
• Stay current with HealthStream assignments

Skills

• Proficiency in medical equipment (stethoscopes, glucometers, pulse oximeters, thermometers, blood pressure machines, IV pumps, code carts, wound drainage systems, ventilation equipment, etc.)
• Knowledge of patient assessment, documentation, and care coordination
• Ability to educate patients about their illness, treatments, and medications
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
