SME Principal Lead Design Engineer

About the role

SRNL Operations & Facilities Engineering is expanding engineering resources to support growth in project and facilities engineering, counterbalancing current attrition rates. This role will utilize a subcontracted model to provide immediate and surge support for critical infrastructure project design engineering, focusing on modernization of aging and expanding facilities. The ideal candidate will have experience with SRS Conduct of Engineering requirements, including Design Authority experience, with a focus on electrical (power and I&C) or mechanical (ventilation/HVAC & piping) engineering.

Responsibilities

• Perform engineering analysis, design development, and generation of design output documents, including but not limited to:
  • Process Flow
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
  • System Descriptions
  • Mechanical Equipment Lists and Sizing
  • Pipe and Valve Specifications
  • Failure and Accident Analysis
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • ASME Code Design and Evaluation
  • Pipe Stress Analysis
  • Material Handling Design
  • Fire Protection Design
  • HVAC Design
  • Vendor Document Reviews
• Define the scope of technical programs and develop effective, quality solutions to challenges involving unique or controversial problems.
• Apply technical experience to resolve complex problems, incorporating advanced technical practices and new or special materials/processes.
• Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as an expert in a functional area of technical expertise.
• Evaluate program results and prepare reports and recommendations.
• Identify and recommend improvements where established technology is inadequate.
• Stay informed of advancements in technology relevant to the role.
• Prepare plans, including schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements for technical tasks.
• Monitor progress, budget expenditures, and review the quality of work performed.
• Communicate results and objectives verbally and in written form to customers, colleagues, and management.
• Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.
• Enhance expertise through leadership in local technical societies.
• Perform weekly field walk-downs of job sites, which may involve:
  • Uneven surfaces and work in progress
  • Walking distances over half a mile
  • Climbing ladders to access remote areas
  • Wearing protective clothing

Requirements

• BS Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or current registration as a Professional Engineer in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
• 15+ years of design experience in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
• 10+ years of experience working at DOE and/or NRC facilities.
• Experience creating and revising documentation in one or more of the following areas:
  • Process Flow
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
  • System Descriptions
  • Mechanical Equipment Lists and Sizing
  • Pipe and Valve Specifications
  • Failure and Accident Analysis
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • ASME Code Design and Evaluation
  • Pipe Stress Analysis
  • Material Handling Design
  • Fire Protection Design
  • HVAC Design
  • Vendor Document Reviews
• U.S. Citizenship due to federal contract security requirements.
• Ability to successfully pass a federal background investigation to secure and maintain a DOE Q security clearance if required.
• Ability to perform essential functions of the job with reasonable accommodation.
