About the roles
- Polysom Tech I: Performs basic polysomnographic testing and associated interventions under direct supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.
- Polysom Tech II: Performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing and analysis, and associated interventions under general oversight of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist and/or the Medical Director or designee.
Requirements
Polysom Tech I
- Enrolled in an Accredited Sleep Technologist S.T.A.R program through the AASM, or RRT or RPSGT.
- Registry in Polysomnography, Respiratory Care, or EEG required within 3 years of hire.
- Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at hire.
- Certified or registered as a Polysomnographic Technologist (CPSGT or RPSGT) by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) preferred.
Polysom Tech II
- License to practice respiratory care from the Idaho Board of Medicine or a permit to perform polysomnography related to respiratory care.
- Enrolled in, or have completed, the ASTEP program and register as an RPSGT within 1 year from hire by the Board for Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
- Certified or registered as a Polysomnographic Technologist (CPSGT or RPSGT) by the Board for Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
- Minimum two years of direct clinical experience preferred.
- Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at hire.
- Training in electroneurodiagnostics, pulmonary technology, or respiratory care with emphasis on cardiorespiratory, neurological, and sleep/wake physiology preferred.
Responsibilities
- Know, understand, incorporate, and demonstrate the Organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
- Follow procedural protocols (e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration) to ensure collection of appropriate data.
- Ensure accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to patients for revenue management.
- Follow “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (e.g., body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates).
- Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free; identify and report signal abnormalities and make adjustments as necessary.
- Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
- Implement appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.
- Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g., repeat physiological and instrument calibrations and instruct the patient on completing questionnaires).
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
- Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
- Score clinical events (e.g., respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals) according to center-specific protocols.
- Input orders and task information such as account activation, notify and task completion in the powerchart system.
