Essential Duties
- Greet patients, families and internal/external customers in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Answer and handle all incoming calls promptly and politely.
- Refers calls to appropriate providers of care when required, and takes complete messages for providers that do not need to be accessed immediately.
- Empowered to be a problem-solver in assisting callers (e.g. transferring misrouted calls to the appropriate extensions).
- Places pages and routes callbacks.
- Keeps track of charts, maintains an update awareness of the ED environment (updates the boards, knows who is currently on shift [physicians, RNs, LPNs, ED Techs]).
- Keeps track of ED patient’s status and communicates the ED location of the patient to the appropriate internal/external clients.
- Captures and coordinates the discharge of patients by assuring the patient’s discharge instructions are complete and accurate, and alerts the nurse if needed that the discharge is ready.
- Anticipates the needs of the nursing staff and functions as an integrated member of the team in helping to strip linens, clean stretchers, and make the beds.
- Maintains the 24 hour census log for the Emergency Department.
- Understands STEMI and STROKE alerts as well as the required documentation.
- Upon Request of the RN or Physician, calls to dispatch ambulances, critical care ground transport teams or helicopters.
- Performs daily tasks and reports as required.
Job Requirements
- BLS Certification
- Healthcare related experience within the previous 2 years.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Demonstrated typing speed of 40 wpm.
- Demonstrate computer skills including word processing and data entry.
- Excellent verbal and communication skills required.
