About the role
This position provides interpreting or transliterating services for students at Wake Technical Community College, either in the classrooms or in other college approved settings.
Responsibilities
- Prepares appropriately for each instructional meeting by reviewing course materials and preparing technical vocabulary for classroom interpreting and development of professional skills
- Provides classroom and on-call interpreting/transliterating (i.e., Individualized Learning Center (ILC), teacher or advisor conferences, graduation ceremonies, and other school functions)
- Works as a team interpreter in classrooms or meetings as requested
- Substitutes for other interpreters on an as-needed basis
- Promotes disability awareness and helps the school staff, faculty, and students develop positive attitudes toward disabilities
- Fulfills a schedule provided by the Coordinator for each semester
- Sets aside time for monthly submission of hours for payment
- Mentors, trains, and provides feedback to less experienced interpreters regarding the enhancement of sign language interpreting skills as needed
Requirements
- Knowledge and skills as outlined in Knowledge, Skills & Abilities section
- Demonstrated abilities and experiences working with a diverse population
- Average of two years of experience interpreting and/or transliterating in a post-secondary setting
- A minimum of an Associate's degree and holds a full or provisional license from the NCITLB (North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator License) or a BEI (Board of Interpreting) Certification or National Interpreter/Transliterator Certification
- Proficiency in other modes of communication for the Deaf, that includes but is not limited to Cued Speech, Signed English and Oral Interpreting
