About the role

Broughton Hospital is currently accepting applications for two (2) Licensed Sign Language Interpreters, one (1) on 1st Shift and one (1) on 2nd Shift, to work in the Deaf Services Department; specifically, on a co-ed deaf unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting services for patients who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders and to hospital staff that support these patients within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Teach beginning American Sign Language (ASL) classes.
  • Render manually, orally or in writing a deaf person's message.
  • Interpret, transliterate, and sign to voice interpreting.
  • Assess the communication skills level of clients and exercise judgment in determining the services to be provide.

Requirements

  • NC Interpreter and Transliterator License.
  • Preferred experience providing sign language interpreting services in a mental health setting.
  • Ability to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, and complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.
  • Mandatory to report or stay over during adverse weather events.
  • Flexibility on a daily basis to meet patient needs.

Qualifications

  • Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an interpreter training program from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional interpreting experience in a community, business, or government program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Knowledge of mental health settings.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Flexible scheduling.

Pay

Recruitment Range: $52,592.00 - $92,036.00

Schedule

The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday. On-Call coverage is required for weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule amongst a team of four (4) Sign Language Interpreters. Flexibility is required on a daily basis to meet patient needs.

With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.
