Shop Service Technician 3 - Heavy Equipment

About the role

This mechanic position is responsible for performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered heavy construction equipment and/or related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. Can work independently or as a member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfies customer needs and achieves departmental goals.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures
• Disassembles and assembles of machine components to manufacturer’s specifications through the use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any specialized tooling
• Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components
• Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition
• Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return
• Mentors and helps train other technicians
• Completes all documents associated with repairs in a timely manner
• Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
• Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs

Requirements

• Four or more years of diesel-powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred
• Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams experience is preferred
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred

Qualifications

• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
• Knowledge of heavy equipment machines such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt moving equipment preferred
• Knowledge of CAT ET and CAT SIS 2.0
• Capable of troubleshooting, and diagnosing emission failures and repair
• Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems
• Quality control analysis skills - Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
• Operation and control skills - Controlling operations of equipment or systems
• Equipment selection skills - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job

Skills

• Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
• The ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions
• The ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
• The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
• The ability to read, write, and understand information
• The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
