About the role

As the Shop Lead Technician, you will perform inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of heavy equipment and related components, following established procedures and guidelines. You will lead a team to provide mechanical services that meet customer needs and achieve departmental goals, including establishing production goals, supervising, training, and evaluating service employees.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures.
  • Provide quality control and assurance inspections of completed tasks.
  • Disassemble and assemble machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling.
  • Rebuild, repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components.
  • Demonstrate strong customer relations and communicate customer needs to shop management.
  • Plan and control the cost of repair jobs, complete parts orders, and identify parts for return.
  • Provide task and behavior-oriented supervision, mentoring, and training to team members.
  • Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and company procedures, promoting a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Work overtime as required by workload and customer needs.
  • Perform the duties of a Service Supervisor during their absence.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment and promote the company’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Monitor physical requirements for work completion (facilities, tools, environmental) and communicate needs to supervisors.
  • Model and reinforce company policies and practices to align with the company’s mission and values.
  • Achieve labor sales and utilization expectations to meet team revenue targets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 10+ years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel equipment preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Proficient with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.
  • Strong quality control analysis skills to conduct tests and inspections, evaluate performance, and communicate findings.
  • Operation and control skills for managing equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills to determine the tools and equipment needed for jobs.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and proper repair procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics, operating and maintenance service manuals.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to set priorities and handle stress in a fast-paced industry.
  • Team player with enthusiasm, hard work ethic, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • High degree of interpersonal skills with excellent written and oral communication.
  • Personal discipline to represent the company professionally and work with customers in a respectful manner.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily work indoors in a non-climate-controlled environment.
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment.
  • Required to work in cramped spaces and/or at heights.
  • Must use personal protective equipment to prevent injury or exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Physical demands include standing, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, and lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Frequent use of a broad variety of tools and machines for maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Must be able to see, read, and write to complete job responsibilities.
  • Use of computers and other technology to perform job duties.
