Shipyard Safety Inspector

About the Role
You will serve as a critical safety leader on our waterfront, overseeing hazard identification and safety compliance across all shipyard operations. This role grants you the explicit authority to identify existing or predictable hazards and take prompt corrective action to protect our crew.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the designated Competent Person to oversee high-risk activities including confined space entry, fall protection, fire watch, and hot work operations.
- Conduct rigorous pre-entry testing and continuous atmospheric monitoring of confined spaces such as tanks, voids, and cofferdams.
- Identify and immediately correct hazardous conditions, exercising direct authority to stop unsafe work when necessary.
- Inspect critical shipyard structures and equipment, including scaffolding, rigging, ladders, and fall protection systems, to verify complete compliance.
- Maintain accurate, detailed safety logs, inspection records, and work permits to ensure regulatory transparency.
- Train and advise crew members on safe work practices tailored specifically to the unique hazards of a shipyard environment.
- Coincide closely with safety management to conduct incident investigations and implement effective corrective actions.
- Ensure all daily operations remain in strict compliance with OSHA, USCG, and company safety policies.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in shipyard, marine, or industrial safety operations.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of OSHA Shipyard Employment Standards (29 CFR 1915).
- Valid Confined Space Competent Person certification, or the immediate ability to obtain it.
- Hands-on experience operating gas detection and atmospheric monitoring equipment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to enforce safety standards under pressure.
- Physical ability to work at heights, enter tight confined spaces, and perform duties in varying outdoor weather conditions.
Qualifications

- Professional background in the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, or commercial marine industry.

- Familiarity with rigging standards and crane safety protocols.
