Shipping Manager

About the role

The Shipping Manager has overall responsibility for the Shipping Department, including loading, unloading, processing paperwork, and monitoring all equipment operators. Safe operations, accurate paperwork, and properly loaded trucks are critical to success in this role. This position includes manual labor.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all trucks are loaded with the proper contents per the manifest.
• Supervise and collaborate with other managers, develop schedules, monitor performance, and recommend discipline as appropriate, including terminations.
• Train employees in job responsibilities and safe operating procedures.
• Interview candidates and recommend hires with HR and Assistant Branch Manager.
• Ensure employees pick and process orders expediently, accurately, and timely; assist as needed to support Distribution Center goals.
• Review product being picked from stock to ensure order accuracy.
• Review staging lanes to ensure all product is loaded properly per store destination.
• Follow load optimization scheme to ensure outbound trucks are at optimal cube and weight.
• Maintain material handling equipment and communicate malfunctioning machines to management.
• Follow a regular maintenance schedule for cleanliness, including scrubbing and cleaning underneath pallets.
• Understand the general function of a Warehouse Management System (WMS) and follow work instructions; escalate WMS problems and process opportunities to Assistant Branch Manager.
• Ensure trash is removed from the floor and properly discarded, including broken pallets, scraps of wood, corrugated, food, and others.
• Communicate low stock/out of stock or other inventory-related concerns to the Inventory Controller.
• Perform additional duties, responsibilities, and projects as assigned.
• Conduct weekly self-audits of staging lanes, loading dock, and check in with employees during stand-up meetings and KPI reviews.
• Support Distribution Center cleanliness, organization, and success.
• Strengthen the knowledge and skills of the entire team to improve Distribution Center performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree, OR High School Diploma or GED with at least 4 years of experience in customer service, OR any appropriate combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and colleagues.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, mass, and volume.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.

Work Environment

Ambient temperature Distribution Center with occasional interactions outside with loading carriers.

FLSA: Non-exempt (Paid by the hour). Supervisor: Assistant Branch Manager.
