About the role

This course is an introduction to the concept of the city as a creative environment promoting not only growth and wealth but also social justice, equality, cooperation, and civility. Students will learn to build their own writing practice to help them observe, interpret, and reflect upon the process of urban interaction and the relationship between creativity and justice. Restricted to first-year students.

Class schedule: Thursdays 2-5pm
Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2027 to April 30, 2027

The delivery method for this course is currently in-person. The course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the College.

Responsibilities

• Teach the full course
• Conduct all grading
• Prepare and submit all final marks
• Hold office hours each week
• Answer student questions by email and/or appointment

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• MA in journalism, urban studies, writing, media studies, or related field, or relevant professional experience
• Professional experience as a writer, journalist, editor, critic, or public communicator, with an emphasis on cities, civic life, advocacy, or social media
• At least 3 years of experience teaching writing, journalism, media, urban studies, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

• Publication record in journalism, nonfiction, criticism, or urban writing
• Demonstrated interest in pedagogy
• Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates
• Familiarity with Toronto’s civic, cultural, and media landscape

Pay

• Sessional Lecturer 1: $9,997.48 (includes 4% vacation pay)
• Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term: $10,699.22 (includes 6% vacation pay)
• Sessional Lecturer 2: $10,699.22 (includes 6% vacation pay)
• Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term: $10,953.96 (includes 6% vacation pay)
• Sessional Lecturer 3: $10,953.96 (includes 6% vacation pay)
• Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term: $11,228.90 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
