Sessional Lecturer
About the role
The Option Seminar provides third year Engineering Science students with an introduction to their upper-year discipline of study, encouraging students to consider different educational and career pathways through sessions with other students from their Option/Major, featuring research and industry directions and the relationship between the Option/Major and its social & environmental context. Students also participate in program-wide seminars that offer career exploration opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Plan and facilitate 12 hour-long Program-Wide Seminars throughout the academic year
- Support and coordinate 8 other seminar series run by the EngSci Major Chairs (one for each Engineering Science Major)
- Prepare materials and deliver seminars, recruit EngSci alumni and other guests as seminar speakers and panelists, moderate panel discussions, track student attendance, introduce, run, and assess two CR/NCR assignments
- Coordinate Major-Specific seminar series by communicating with Major Chairs, assisting in recruiting speakers, and compiling attendance records
- Making a final determination of CR or NCR for each student based on their (Program-Wide and Major-Specific) seminar attendance and performance on the two course assignments
Requirements
- Minimum Master's Degree in Engineering, English or a related discipline
- Prioritization to those with PhD in Engineering or English and experience teaching professional communication in an engineering setting
- Experience providing constructive feedback on written and oral assignments in an engineering setting
- Leading a teaching team and/or calibrating grading of open-ended assignments
- Strong professional communication skills to engage alumni and guest speakers, coordinate teams, and deliver engaging seminars
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Engineering, English or a related discipline
- PhD in Engineering or English preferred
- Experience teaching professional communication in an engineering setting
- Experience providing constructive feedback on written and oral assignments
- Experience leading a teaching team and/or calibrating grading of open-ended assignments
- Strong professional communication skills to engage alumni and guest speakers, coordinate teams, and deliver engaging seminars
