About the role
Co-instructor position for FOR201HS – Conservation of Tropical and Subtropical Forests. Course enrollment estimate: 250 students. No TA support provided. Class meets Thursdays 13:00–15:00. Appointment runs January 1, 2027 – April 30, 2027.
Responsibilities
- Teach 12 lecture hours (6 weeks) covering ecological, economic, and social concepts of tropical and subtropical forests.
- Critically review tropical and subtropical forest dynamics, selective logging, and agroforestry.
- Build and update the course syllabus.
- Manage the Quercus course platform, including posting notes and readings.
- Coordinate guest lecturers where applicable.
- Grade and provide guidance on student assignments, group projects, midterms, and final exams.
- Hold regular office hours to mentor students on research and writing standards.
Requirements
- Ph.D. preferred in forest conservation, tropical ecology, geography, or environmental sciences, or equivalent professional experience.
- Knowledge of tropical and subtropical biomes, deforestation drivers, agroforestry, and biodiversity conservation.
- Understanding of ecological, economic, and social perspectives relating to global forest management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience designing, lecturing, or TAing university-level courses in ecology or conservation.
- Familiarity with digital learning tools, including the University of Toronto Quercus system.
- Ability to run interactive office hours, guide student assignments, and oversee teaching assistants.
Pay
- Sessional Lecturer I: $9,997.47
- Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,699.21
- Sessional Lecturer II: $10,699.21
- Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,953.96
- Sessional Lecturer III: $10,953.96
- Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,228.90
Salary includes 4% or 6% vacation pay, where applicable. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the collective-agreement rates prevail.
