About the role

The Curriculum and Instruction in Social Studies and Aboriginal Education course explores the shared histories of Indigenous and settler relationships across Turtle Island and, while recognizing the US/Canadian divisions as colonial constructs, will focus more specifically on the Canadian context. This course provides a practical and conceptual introduction to the teaching of Social Studies (Grades 4-6), History and Geography (7-10) within the context of Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) understandings. It consists of seminars and workshops designed to emphasize expectations, pedagogy, methodology, and content integrating both Social Studies and Aboriginal Studies in the junior/intermediate grades. The course provides opportunities to develop practical understandings relating to instructional methods and skills through unit and lesson planning, including assessment strategies, in various classroom contexts, as well as the incorporation of Indigenous and Western knowledges. It addresses questions of identity, meaning-making, community, nation, and the interplay between constructions of identity (personal, local, and national) and sovereignty.

Pay

As of September 1, 2026, the minimum stipend is $9972.475 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. As of January 1, 2027, the minimum stipend remains $9972.475 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage.

• Be available to students seeking assistance between classes
• Evaluate and provide students with feedback on their work
• Attend a pre-course planning/preparation meeting with the course instructional team
• Attend MT All-Instructor Meetings (AIM)
• Submit course syllabus as requested by the department

Requirements

• Doctoral degree or other graduate degree
• Relevant teacher experience in K-12 settings in a relevant discipline
• Demonstrated currency and mastery of the subject area (e.g., scholarly publications establishing expertise)
• Demonstrated knowledge and practice of equity, diversity, and inclusion

Ontario certification as a teacher is an asset.
