About the role

This course provides an overview of different approaches to literacy teaching. It addresses foundational skills for reading, writing, and oral language, along with critical skills for analyzing and questioning media texts. Students will develop their understanding of evidence-based pedagogical approaches to teaching literacy, with a focus on creating opportunities for differentiated and inclusive learning and assessment in K-10 classrooms. This course is open only to students in the Master of Teaching program.

Sessional dates of appointment: 2026-09-01 - 2027-04-30

Appointment percentage: 100

Pay

As of September 1, 2026, the minimum stipend is $9972.475 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. As of January 1, 2027, the minimum stipend remains $9972.475 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, organize, and teach this graduate course;
  • Be available to students seeking assistance between classes;
  • Evaluate and provide students with feedback on their work;
  • Attend a pre-course planning/preparation meeting with the course instructional team;
  • Attend MT All-Instructor Meetings (AIM);
  • Submit course syllabus as requested by the department.

Requirements

  • Possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience;
  • Demonstrate currency and mastery in the course subject matter;
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching, including online teaching as relevant;
  • Demonstrate evidence of knowledge and practice of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching and leading teachers/teacher-candidates professional learning;
  • An Ontario Teaching certificate is an asset.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
